What do Doctor Who and Sister Wendy have in common? They both looked at this painting and saw something wrong. In the good Sister’s epic The Story of Painting, she points out the curious fact that Van Gogh, a failed seminarian, had painted this church with no door. The Doctor sees something even more peculiar. But what? The answer can be found in “Vincent and the Doctor,” the first (and so far only) episode to be written by an Oscar-nominee, Richard Curtis (Blackadder , The Vicar of Dibley). Even if you haven’t been following the current Doctor Who season all that closely, sheer curiosity and the lure of plein air Provence might be the trigger. There’s also a special guest cameo by Bill Nighy (State of Play, Gideon’s Daughter), whose big breakthrough came in Curtis’s Love Actually. We understand that a lush 6-disc collection is in works and should be available on both Blu-ray and DVD in time for the holidays.

Re: Van Gogh in Doctor Who
Oh my!
Made me cry for the joy and the pain. My thanks to all the actors and writers and everyone involved in making this episode happen.
God bless you all.
Loved this episode!!! So glad to hear to hear it will be on DVD soon!!!! Truly, one of the best episodes I’ve ever watched–emotional, funny, truly heartwarming.
In addition, PLEASE tell me Gavin & Stacey the complete series will be available soon–we have series 1, but not 2, 3, and The Christmas Special on DVD. I know so many who want the whole series!!! Please!!!
This Doctor is one of the best I didnt think any one could play the Doctor as good as David Tennant, but Matt Smith has made the charater his own, cant wait for the re-runs if there is room with all the Gordon Ramsey repeats
Glad to hear. I gambled before the first episode aired on a Season Pass on iTunes, and haven’t regretted it. I will most certainly be buying the DVD boxed set when it comes out.
Any news on a soundtrack CD? I’m not a huge fan of the theme variant used this year but a lot of the incidental music was fantastic.
Absolutely a fantastic episode. Made me laugh and cry. It’s as good as it gets!
One of my favorite episodes. Beautiful, touching sad and happy. Big kudos to the people involved in that scene where Vincent, the Doctor and Amy are lying on the ground looking into the sky and it turns into one of Vincent’s paintings.
Of all Van Gogh’s paintings, The Church At Arles, has always frightened me and thanks to Richard Curtis, I finally have my answer and reason.
This episode of Dr. Who was one of the most beautiful and brilliant episodes of the new season.
Thanks to all and can’t wait for the rerun this Saturday and the DVD to come.
Love Actually wasn’t Billy Nightly’s breakthrough movie. He’s all a long and successful career before that and was on the long list of actors on several times to played the Doctor. For 9, 10 and 11. I think that Love Actually was maybe more of a commerical success for him because more Americans saw it. Agree, with Nick enough of the Gordon Ramsay repeats. Especially, since there 2, 3 and 4 yrs old and to mention the STNG esps that several others channels carry and it’s not even a British show. I have no problem showing older programing –but, if you going to that bring back to britcoms that you used to carry. Like Blackadder, ABFAB, Keeping up Appearances, Some Mother’s Do Have ‘Em or maybe some classic Who. I love Vicent and the Doctor by the way.
I agree. This is one of the best Dr Who shows ever. I thought Tony Curran was excellant as Vincent! Please have Mr Curtis write more episodes!
Has to be the best episode of the year. Loved the ending.
TV doesn’t get any better than this!
Absolutely the best of the new Dr. Who series. I loved this episode! Very well written, and well played…thank you so much! Yes, I agree, get Mr. Curtis to write more episodes, but I doubt if they could get any better than this!
