Stepping Up Releases of MI-5

MI-5

We were cheered last year when Richard Armitage joined the cast of MI-5 for Series Seven, but as we’ve seen over and over again at MI5, spying is a very dangerous business (who knew?), often ending in the expiration of our favorite characters. Now that we’ve examined the production dossiers from Season Eight, we can make one guarantee: Richard Armitage appears in all eight episodes. In one he’s seen running past the O2 (formerly known as the Millennium Dome) — very 007 (as in The World Is Not Enough). As Season Eight opens, the longest serving member of the team, Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) has disappeared.  The search for him uncovers conspiracies involving Iraq, the CIA, MI6 and perhaps even former colleague Ruth Evershed (Nicola Walker). Ruth first appeared in Season Two, but left for Cyprus four years ago to start a new life, or so she said.  MI-5: Volume 8 comes out early next year, and rather than waiting until January 2012, we plan to release MI-5: Volume 9, currently airing on BBC in the UK, sometime next summer.

David Attenborough probes “first life”

David Attenborough The First Life

You might think that in a natural history career that spans more than fifty years, David Attenborough (Life, Planet Earth) has covered everything, but not quite! Up to now the Ediacaran period (roughly 600 million to 542 million years ago) has been sadly neglected on television. Until recently the consensus was that Earth was incapable of hosting life then, but fossil evidence has turned up a surprising variety of animal characteristics, such as possibly the first eyes and first teeth on the planet. There’s plenty of CGI to support Sir David’s infectious enthusiasm about these early animals, and judging from the photo above, a living fossil or two to meet up close and personal. This one is a mantis shrimp. Discovery is rushing this just completed two-hour mini-landmark program to air on November 22nd, as the finale to their encore presentation of Life.  We’re planning a DVD release with really good extras in the spring.

Fresh Fields coming to DVD!

Fresh Fields

Fresh Fields

We confess that we don’t know much about Fresh Fields, except that the Thames TV series was a Britcom staple on PBS and that the shop has fielded queries about it for as long as we can remember. On behalf of those who have clamored faithfully through the years, we are happy to report that the first season (of a possible four) is rolling out soon. Julia McKenzie (the current Miss Marple) stars as Hester Fields, a grandmother who views her empty nest as an opportunity to re-invent her life. Anton Rodgers (Murder Most English, Lillie) plays her husband William, a London accountant who is decidedly set in his ways.

Idris Elba stars in BBC’s Luther!

Idris Elba as Luther

This has been a bumper year for detective series on the BBC. Wallander (currently running on Masterpiece) came back stronger than ever, and Sherlock will screen its premiere episode at Comic Con New York tonight. And then there’s Luther, a completely new and original detective series starring Idris Elba (The Wire), which premieres on BBC America next Saturday, October 17th. Frankly, we were a bit skeptical that new ground could really be broken in an urban police series, but screening three psychologically intense and plot-rich episodes dispelled any doubts. One wonders how compelling the pre-production buzz for this series was, because so many fine actors are in the supporting cast: Ruth Wilson (Jane Eyre – 2006), Paul McGann (Collision, Doctor Who), Indira Varma (Rome) and Steven Mackintosh (The Other Boleyn Girl – BBC). Watch for Paul Rhys (recently seen as Ivan in Being Human Season Two) as a completely different kind of vampire. Like many British actors, Idris made some of his earliest TV appearances on the BBC, most memorably paired with Patsy in the “Sex” episode of Absolutely Fabulous Season Three. The Luther DVD will come out  just after the season’s run. More Luther is planned for next year.

ATTENTION Henry VII fans: We had hoped to bring The Shadow of the Tower to DVD last August, but an unexpected glitch had to be ironed first. Happily, the DVD is now slated for early next year.
