The Inbetweeners on DVD this summer!

The Inbetweeners

Ever since BBC America began airing The Inbetweeners in 2009, we have been fielding anxious queries for DVDs from its legion of fans. At least, it is worth the wait to get all three seasons in one complete series DVD set. Created and written by Peep Shows Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, The Inbetweeners are four suburban teens between boyhood and manhood, and socially ranking somewhat above utter pariahs and decidedly below the cool kids.  The series stars Simon Bird (Friday Night Dinners), James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas, whose cringe-making antics have endeared them to the British public. Emily Head, daughter of Anthony Head, is also a series regular. (Incidentally, James Buckley was subsequently cast as Del Trotter in the Only Fools and Horses prequel, Rock and Chips.)

The Inbetweeners: The Complete Series will be available on July 17, 2012, and with any luck the UK runaway hit Inbetweeners movie may come to US theaters before the summer is through.

Matt Smith is Going for Gold

Going For Gold

Laurence Cendrowicz © BBC 2012

Before Matt Smith returns in Doctor Who this summer, he will test his mettle in an inspiring true story from the 1948 London Olympics. As Bert Bushnell, Matt Smith portrays a humble clerk with an enthusiasm for sculling. (While sculling looks like rowing to most of us, but we have learned that, for sporting purposes, rowing involves one oar per person, while sculling involves two.) Six weeks before the games, Bert is offered a chance to compete, but only in tandem with Oxford man Richard “Dickie” Burnell (Sam Hoare, Jane Eyre [Masterpiece 2006]). World class teams aren’t built overnight, and Bert and Dickie’s prickly first efforts don’t inspire much optimism. Much of the water action was filmed along the placid riverbanks at Henley-on-Thames, which is roughly the same area that inspired Kenneth Graham’s The Wind in the Willows. Geoffrey Palmer (As Time Goes By), Douglas Hodge (Middlemarch) and James Frain (The Tudors) are also in the cast.

BBC America will air Going for Gold this summer shortly before the London Olympics begin. Canadian broadcast information is not yet known. The DVD should follow soon after.

Exclusive: Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 93

Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 93

Another irresistible exclusive DVD release of Last of the Summer Wine is coming this summer to BBC America Shop and BBC Canada Shop. The DVD includes the seven regular episodes of Season 16 plus the special “Welcome to Earth,” in which something funny (and perhaps even extraterrestrial) is happening at the local stone circle. What visitors from another world would make of the denizens of this remote pocket of Yorkshire is anyone’s guess. We’ve grown so accustomed to their penchant for inconvenient fancies and equipment cobbled together from found objects. Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 1993 can be pre-ordered now for July 24th delivery.

Kenneth Branagh returns as Kurt Wallander

Wallander

It seems that no one can get enough of Scandinavian detectives these days, so we’re glad to hear that Kenneth Branagh will soon return for a third season of Wallander, the role that earned him last year’s Best Actor BAFTA Award. The feature-length films include The Dogs of Riga and Before the Frost, based on Henning Mankell novels, and an original mystery, An Event in Autumn. This season’s cast also features Lindsay Duncan (The Rise and Fall of Margaret Thatcher), Saskia Reeves (Luther), Donald Sumpter (Game of Thrones) and Jeany Spark (Tess of the D’Urbervilles) as Kurt’s daughter, Linda. Masterpiece has posted premiere dates for Wallander on September 9th, 16th and 23rd, and the DVD release will become available after the season run.

Viewer Alert:  The much anticipated second season of Sherlock films starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will premiere on Masterpiece this Sunday, May 6th, with “A Scandal in Belgravia.” Lara Pulver is not to be missed as “the woman” Irene Adler.
