Comic-Con, Misfits Season 1 and Emmys

Misfits

Mark Johnson © Clerkenwell Films 2009

We had hoped to post a message or two from Comic-Con last week, but we found ourselves serving shoppers and visitors round the clock in the BBC America booth. There were a few stolen moments when we snapped a costume photo or two to send to Anglophenia (whose coverage was fantastic), but that was the extent of our journalistic contributions.

Thanks to all our booth visitors for their exceptional patience in negotiating our extended shopping line. Luckily, our video wall offered 45 minutes of previews, clips and fun features to pass the time and spark conversations. One shirtless shot of David Tennant (from the upcoming BBC America miniseries Spies of Warsaw) spurred a great deal of interest, as did the promo for Matt Smith in the Olympics drama Going for Gold, which airs next Wednesday, July 25th.

San Diego is a beautiful city with one on the most enviable summer climates in the country, and we were glad to see that the stars of Doctor Who had a chance to get out and about town:

We suspect that the only outdoor exposure some Comic-Con attendees get is waiting outside the convention center for their favorite panel:

In the spirit of Comic-Con, we are releasing Misfits Season One on DVD July 31st. This BAFTA-winning drama about unruly teens who develop superpowers was described by New York Magazine as “Heroes with Buffy-esque snark.” The DVD includes over 70 minutes of extras and an on-pack offer for a T-shirt in that “community service” shade of orange that is so trendy this summer.

Congratulations to BBC’s nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards!

Luther and Sherlock both garnered Best Miniseries nominations. Acting nods went to Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Idris Elba (Luther), Martin Freeman (Sherlock), and Emma Thompson (The Song of Lunch). Also in the running are writers Neil Cross (Luther), Steven Moffat (Sherlock), and Abi Morgan (The Hour), and directors Sam Miller (Luther) and Paul McGuigan (Sherlock). Sherlock also received seven technical nominations, including Outstanding Music by David Arnold and Michael Price.

Landmark nature series Frozen Planet earned five nominations, including Outstanding Non-Fiction Series and Outstanding Cinematography.

The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe

Doctor Who Christmas 2011

Hmmm… the title of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special sounds a bit Narnia-inspired. From the trailer we posted last week, it also looks a bit Narnia-inspired, especially with that line about a “forest in a box.” That’s Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, Sense & Sensibility [2008], Lark Rise to Candleford [S1]) as the widow, and some of you may have spotted Bill Bailey (Black Books, Spaced). Christmas certainly came early for Bill Bailey, who is a lifelong fan of Doctor Who. Check out his brilliant Belgian jazz version of the Docteur Qui theme.

Colin Firth fan alert: Imagine attending the premiere and after party of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy as the guest of Mr. Firth himself. Click here to find out more about this charity auction on ebay. But time is of the essence, the bidding ends today, November 23rd, at 6 pm ET.

Christopher Eccleston shines in Lennon biopic

Christopher Eccleston in Lennon Naked

We’ve already posted Lennon Naked in the upcoming DVDs section, but we believe it deserves a bit more of a call-out. The telefilm, which covers Lennon’s final years in England, stirred a lot of buzz when the BBC aired it this summer, especially for Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who). He has already been tipped as the man to beat for the Best Actor Award in next year’s TV BAFTAs. That’s Naoko Mori (Torchwood, Absolutely Fabulous) channeling Yoko Ono. Fans of Lark Rise to Candleford will recognize Claudie Blakeley as Lennon’s first wife, Cynthia. The DVD will follow the premiere on Masterpiece this fall.

Seven Wonders of the Solar System

Brian Cox

Brian Cox is one of BBC’s rising stars, mostly for his knack for demonstrating complex concepts like time and gravity in unique and interesting ways. It also doesn’t hurt that he is, as my mother would say, “easy on the eyes.” Some of that charisma was earned in his rock star days, where as keyboardist for D:REAM, he had a top 10 UK hit. You can see him bopping around here.
