You may have first learned of Spies of Warsaw from the sizzle reel that ran at the BBC America booth at Comic-Con, or you may have seen the trailer that was greeted with roars of delight at the Doctor Who Season 7 Episode One screening in New York last summer.

We are happy to see that BBC America has set air dates on Wednesday, April 3rd and 10th in the Dramaville slot at 9ET/8CT. (Canadian broadcast information is not yet known.)

Spies of Warsaw is adapted from the novel by Alan Furst, who draws his spy heroes from the peripheral nations caught up in the treacherous years before and during World War II. David Tennant stars as Jean-Francois Mercier, a French military attaché stationed in Warsaw. Decorated in World War I by Poland as well as France, Mercier holds the unpopular view that another war is imminent. Between night missions to the German border, Mercier meets and falls in love with Anna (Janet Montgomery) a French-Polish lawyer for the League of Nations. Supporting cast includes: Burn Gorman (Torchwood) as Mercier’s jealous colleague, Linda Bassett (Queenie in Lark Rise to Candleford), Julian Glover (Wish Me Luck), Anton Lesser (The Hour), and Andrew Sachs (Fawlty Towers) as a refugee violinist with unexpected skills.

Brimming with period atmosphere, danger and romance, Spies of Warsaw is available April 16th on DVD and Blu-ray may be pre-ordered now.

Counting down to Twenty Twelve

Twenty Twelve

Jack Barnes © BBC 2011

Tonight BBC America will premiere the first three episodes of Twenty Twelve, a new comedy starring Hugh Bonneville and written and directed by John Morton (People Like Us). Though Hugh rose to prominence as Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey, his first nomination for a Best Actor TV BAFTA was for his performance as Ian Fletcher in Twenty Twelve. Ian is in charge of “Deliverance” for the London 2012 Olympics, which appears to be an umbrella term for getting everything working on time. Unlike Lord Grantham, Ian lacks adequate staff. Jessica Hynes (Spaced) plays a PR facilitator whose hyper-creativity is only surpassed by her cavalier disregard for the facts. Here they are discovering a glaring disconnect between art and function at the launch event for the 2012 countdown clock. Yet after this and many subsequent disasters, Ian still insists, “My default setting is pretty positive.” The cast also includes Olivia Coleman (Peep Show) as Ian’s hopelessly devoted personal assistant and Karl Theobald (Primeval [Vol 1]), who is quite convincing as the kind of team player who always seems to know exactly what he’s talking about, but hardly ever does. The mockumentrary’s narration by David Tennant (Doctor Who, Hamlet) is typically low-key, but don’t tune it out. He has some of the best double-speak lines. A complete series DVD is in the works for later this year.

BBC America has put together a great page on the show, which includes a link to watch Episode 1 now.  In Canada Twenty Twelve is running on the Comedy Network on Sunday nights at 9pm ET.

The final Sarah Jane Adventures

Sarah Jane Adventures

As the Doctor Who community speculates over the announcement that Jenna-Louise Coleman will be the Doctor’s next companion, we turn our attention to Elisabeth Sladen, whose seasons on Doctor Who as Sarah Jane Smith from 1973 to 1976 redefined our expectations for all the companions who came after. The Sarah Jane Adventures spin-off series, which followed her successful reunion with the Doctor in 2006 opposite David Tennant, delighted her long-standing fans as well as a new generation. Sadly, Elisabeth Sladen died last April while Season Five was still in production, but six of the planned episodes were completed, and subsequently aired in the UK last fall. The DVD includes three two-part stories and a memorial piece, Goodbye Bannerman Road.

Don’t forget, Frozen Planet continues this Sunday at 8 pm on Discovery in both the US and Canada.

Good news for Foyle’s War fans: The popular detective series starring Michael Kitchen is being revived for an eighth season, airing on ITV1 next year and hopefully coming to DVD soon after.

Opening this week in cinemas: Rachel Weisz (Page Eight), Tom Hiddleston (Wallander) and Simon Russell Beale (MI-5 – Vols 9 & 10) star an acclaimed new adaptation of The Deep Blue Sea by Terence Rattigan. Our nine-play DVD The Terence Rattigan Collection includes the BBC’s 1994 version, which starred Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey), Colin Firth and Ian Holm.

Christmastime with the Doctor

Doctor Who: The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe

When we last mentioned this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, the North American air date was still unconfirmed. We are happy to report that the much-anticipated special will air on December 25th at 9pm Eastern / 8pm Central on BBC America and in Canada on Space. But that’s not all, in both countries the lead-in at 8pm Eastern / 7pm Central will be Doctor Who: The Best of the Christmas Specials. This will be the first time the Specials have reached back to cover the David Tennant years, and we hear that the Tenth Doctor has quite a few fans among the regular commentators.

Speaking of the Best of Specials, the first three (shown last summer on BBC America) will be DVD extras when The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe comes out on DVD and Blu-ray on February 14.

Fan Alert: On December 24th at , BBC America will air a Year in Review special of The Nerdist, with exclusive pieces filmed in London with David Tennant and Simon Pegg (Spaced).

The Office decade

y Gervais, The Office

Has it really been ten years since Ricky Gervais and company brought the mockumentary to the forefront of TV comedy? People Like Us had paved the way in its fly-on-the-wall approach, but its only recurring character was off screen most of the time. The weekly change in cast (even with guest stars of the caliber of David Tennant and Bill Nighy) offered little chance for depth of the bonding that occurred between audiences and the staff of Wernham Hogg.

Considering the phenomenal influence of The Office in the ensuing decade, the time is right for a 10th Anniversary Special Edition of The Office. In addition to the extras included on the original Collection DVD, we have mined the BBC Archive for the original 20-minute pilot and a 2007 Comedy Connections program tracing the series’ origins. Also included are specially recorded wraparound introductions for each Season One episode that aired on the BBC’s Night of The Office on August 30, 2009, as well as 40 more minutes of cast and celebrity interviews on the impact of The Office on life, the universe and everything. Special guests include Matthew Perry, Ben Stiller, Richard Curtis, Hugh Jackman and more! The Office Special Edition will come out on November 22 (the Tuesday before Thanksgiving), but you can pre-order it now.

The David Tennant Years in a gift set

Doctor Who: The Complete David Tennant Years

David Tennant is on our minds this week because his first made-in-America film, Fright Night, opens in theaters this Friday. He will play Peter Vincent, the role Roddy McDowall played in the 1985 film, and we’ve been trying to spot him in the trailers for weeks. Just when we feared that David and the delightful character of Peter were languishing on the cutting room floor, he began showing up in revamped trailers last week. As you may have gathered, we’re fans.

It was just with those true David Tennant fans in mind that we put together Doctor Who: The Complete David Tennant Years. Totaling 26 discs of the Tenth Doctor, it includes every episode, every Christmas Special and even the two animated adventures. The video content remains as previously released, but packaged in a commemorative, compact album in time for the holidays, and already available now for pre-order.

Wedding bells for Sarah Jane?

The Sarah Jane Adventures

Ever since the new Doctor Who series began five years ago, fans have been clamoring for guest appearances by their favorite companions (and monsters) from the classic era. While each season seems to revive another species of monster, the only classic companion to return has been Sarah Jane Smith. When Elisabeth Sladen, who originally appeared with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, made a guest appearance opposite David Tennant in 2006, the enthusiastic fan reception inspired Russell T Davies to create the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures. The series is still going strong on the BBC, and Season Three offers the added attraction of a guest appearance by David Tennant in the last scenes he filmed as the Tenth Doctor. The Doctor doesn’t seem best pleased to see Sarah Jane hooking up with Nigel Havers, but since this season premieres on DVD, we’ll have to wait until early next year to find out why.

London’s hottest ticket

David Tennant - Hamlet

Last year around this time the London theatre world was all a-buzz over a new production of Hamlet from the Royal Shakespeare Company. Tickets for the limited run sold out in three hours, and we’ll concede that some of the mania stemmed from the casting of Doctor Who’s David Tennant as Hamlet opposite Star Trek’s Patrick Stewart as Claudius. But theatre buffs were as excited as everyone else, and even the lion’s share of the critics were onboard. For all who are sorry they missed it, and for all who were lucky enough to see it, the production has been adapted to film for the BBC’s holiday schedule. Look for it next year on PBS and on DVD. Click here for a review from the BBC News archive. Be sure and scroll down for a video report from the stage door.

Tune in Saturday for The Waters of Mars!

David Tennant - The Waters of Mars

This Saturday, the countdown to The End of Time begins – not 2012, but the final three adventures of the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. BBC America premieres The Waters of Mars on Saturday, December 19 at 9pm ET, followed by The End of Time Part One on December 26th and End of Time Part Two on January 2nd. David Tennant is the most popular incarnation of the Doctor since Tom Baker. While we’re sorry to see him go, we’re excited by hints that these specials will give the Time Lord the most glorious send-off ever. Click here to hear him discuss his imminent departure.

Russell T Davies says goodbye to the TARDIS

ComicCon 09

Here at BBC America we’re just back from Comic-Con where we rolled out our biggest Doctor Who talents including writer-producer Russell T Davies, star David Tennant and director Euros Lyn. Russell and David’s visit to Comic-Con – their first – came as they wrapped up their final episodes of all time (for now!). Please click through to see a fun interview Russell recently gave after Doctor Who Specials wrapped. Watch until the end for a quick preview of the penultimate David Tennant story “Waters of Mars.”

There’s a great deal to look forward to from David Tennant in the coming months. In addition to the three exciting Doctor Who specials at the end of this year, David will also make a guest appearance as the Doctor in the upcoming third season of The Sarah Jane Adventures. But the pièce de résistance is the news that his recent performance as Hamlet (which quickly sold out in London) has been picked up for the next season of PBS’ Great Performances. Look for the DVD sometime next year.
