After our huge success with Planet Earth, BBC’s natural history department had what sounded like a pretty risky idea—make a Planet Earth about human beings. In other words, we’d look at each ecosystem, be it mountains, jungles, desert or oceans and see the incredible ways in which human beings have adapted for survival. Would anyone want to watch that? Well, the answer seems to be yes! We’re through the fifth episode (of eight) in the UK and the series is consistently garnering 20% of the UK TV audience. And the press has been rapturous. The Observer called it “one of the most dramatic pieces of television ever filmed” and, in our favorite review, The Guardian said Human Planet was “Preposterously Big Telly, the sort that forces other telly to kneel before it, while it beats its chest and screams.” The series will air later this year on Discovery and we’ll be releasing the original UK version (all eight hours narrated by John Hurt, including lots of behind the scenes features) shortly after the last broadcast.
