Daniel Craig simmers in The Ice House

The Ice House

Nearly fifteen years ago The Ice House aired on Mystery! and introduced us to a young actor named Daniel Craig. He was not yet a star, but his intensity as McLoughlin, a police detective dealing with the pressures of a difficult case, marked him as one to watch.

When a body is discovered in the ice house at Streech Grange, McLoughlin’s more experienced partner Inspector Walsh (Corin Redgrave, The Forsyte Saga) is already convinced he knows the victim and the killers. The corpse must be David Maybury, who went missing ten years before. David had been unhappily married to Phoebe (Penny Downie, Hamlet [2009]), who still lives on the estate with two women (Kitty Aldridge, House of Cards Trilogy and Frances Barber, Doctor Who [S6]).  The local villagers share the notion that the three women are murderers, Lesbians and perhaps even witches. Equally hostile to outsiders, the women of Streech Grange are none too helpful to the police with their inquiries. But something special happens in the scenes between Daniel Craig and Kitty Aldridge that sets The Ice House apart even after all the complexities of the mystery are settled.

Doctor Who fan alert: Series Seven premieres tomorrow, September 1st, on BBC America and on Space in Canada at 9pm ET.

Counting down to Twenty Twelve

Twenty Twelve

Jack Barnes © BBC 2011

Tonight BBC America will premiere the first three episodes of Twenty Twelve, a new comedy starring Hugh Bonneville and written and directed by John Morton (People Like Us). Though Hugh rose to prominence as Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey, his first nomination for a Best Actor TV BAFTA was for his performance as Ian Fletcher in Twenty Twelve. Ian is in charge of “Deliverance” for the London 2012 Olympics, which appears to be an umbrella term for getting everything working on time. Unlike Lord Grantham, Ian lacks adequate staff. Jessica Hynes (Spaced) plays a PR facilitator whose hyper-creativity is only surpassed by her cavalier disregard for the facts. Here they are discovering a glaring disconnect between art and function at the launch event for the 2012 countdown clock. Yet after this and many subsequent disasters, Ian still insists, “My default setting is pretty positive.” The cast also includes Olivia Coleman (Peep Show) as Ian’s hopelessly devoted personal assistant and Karl Theobald (Primeval [Vol 1]), who is quite convincing as the kind of team player who always seems to know exactly what he’s talking about, but hardly ever does. The mockumentrary’s narration by David Tennant (Doctor Who, Hamlet) is typically low-key, but don’t tune it out. He has some of the best double-speak lines. A complete series DVD is in the works for later this year.

BBC America has put together a great page on the show, which includes a link to watch Episode 1 now.  In Canada Twenty Twelve is running on the Comedy Network on Sunday nights at 9pm ET.

Hamlet at Elsinore

Michael Caine & Christopher Plummer

If the release of Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is making you nostalgic for his Shakespearian period, you’re not alone. So what better time to talk about Hamlet at Elsinore? Made in 1964 to commemorate Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary, and rarely seen since, this version of the play has become legendary. Filmed on location at Kronborg Castle in Denmark, it drew together a fantastic cast: Christopher Plummer (The Last Station) as Hamlet, Michael Caine as Horatio and Robert Shaw (A Man for All Seasons) as Claudius. Even smaller parts were carefully cast. A young Donald Sutherland delivers as Fortinbras in the final scene, and Sixties comedian Roy Kinnear (Willy Wonka, Help!) worked his special magic as the Gravedigger.

A couple of years ago, we were at an event in which Michael Caine declared that Plummer was the best Hamlet he had ever seen, and that prompted us to make a serious search of the BBC Archive for viable footage. We’re happy to announce that this year we restored the film digitally, and it was shown at the Sarasota Film Festival last month. As an extra, we are including the interview with Christopher Plummer taped onstage at the festival. To get an inkling of what’s in store from Hamlet at Elsinore, check out the video below. While it’s a tantalizing sampling of short, unrestored clips, it once was all anyone could hope to see. Look for the DVD this fall.

FAN ALERT: This week’s Doctor Who episode “The Doctor’s Wife” is the one that Neil Gaiman fans have been looking forward to even before last season began. The author of American Gods, The Graveyard Book, Coraline and Sandman is a life-long Doctor Who fan, and we can’t wait to see the result of this meeting of the minds. It airs on BBC America at 9pm ET on Saturday, May 14th .

Here’s to 2011!

I don’t know how you are feeling by this time of the year but we’re beat! 2010 was a busy year, filled with successful new launches like Sherlock, Luther, and Life, but we certainly felt like we were all working twice as hard just to stay in place. As it quiets down I thought I’d take a look at the slate we’ve put together next year and share just a few of the things we’re looking forward to sharing with you in the upcoming year:

(1)    Human Planet.  For the first time our Natural History Unit has turned its world class cameramen and story tellers on the most successful animal on the planet—Humans.  What I’ve seen so far looks great!

(2)    More Sherlock!  ‘Nuff said.

(3)    Hamlet at Elsinore.  This much requested version stars Christopher Plummer in the title role.  Sir Michael Caine mentioned at a recent screening we attended that this was the best Hamlet he ever saw (he was also in it) and he wished it would come to DVD.  Your wish, Sir Michael, is our command.  There is also a new Macbeth starring Patrick Stewart, which is airing now in the UK.

(4)    More Primeval!  More MI-5!  More Being Human!  I’m getting a bit overexcited here, aren’t I?

(5)   And finally, our first BD releases of Top Gear (Series 14 and 15).

I don’t want to spoil all our surprises—we’ll have over a 100 new titles next year—but since we’re taking the next week off, we wanted to give you this exciting dose of DVD news to start off what we hope will be a great New Year!

Happy Holidays!

London’s hottest ticket

David Tennant - Hamlet

Last year around this time the London theatre world was all a-buzz over a new production of Hamlet from the Royal Shakespeare Company. Tickets for the limited run sold out in three hours, and we’ll concede that some of the mania stemmed from the casting of Doctor Who’s David Tennant as Hamlet opposite Star Trek’s Patrick Stewart as Claudius. But theatre buffs were as excited as everyone else, and even the lion’s share of the critics were onboard. For all who are sorry they missed it, and for all who were lucky enough to see it, the production has been adapted to film for the BBC’s holiday schedule. Look for it next year on PBS and on DVD.
