David Tennant stars in Spies of Warsaw

Spies of Warsaw

You may have first learned of Spies of Warsaw from the sizzle reel that ran at the BBC America booth at Comic-Con, or you may have seen the trailer that was greeted with roars of delight at the Doctor Who Season 7 Episode One screening in New York last summer.

We are happy to see that BBC America has set air dates on Wednesday, April 3rd and 10th in the Dramaville slot at 9ET/8CT. (Canadian broadcast information is not yet known.)

Spies of Warsaw is adapted from the novel by Alan Furst, who draws his spy heroes from the peripheral nations caught up in the treacherous years before and during World War II. David Tennant stars as Jean-Francois Mercier, a French military attaché stationed in Warsaw. Decorated in World War I by Poland as well as France, Mercier holds the unpopular view that another war is imminent. Between night missions to the German border, Mercier meets and falls in love with Anna (Janet Montgomery) a French-Polish lawyer for the League of Nations. Supporting cast includes: Burn Gorman (Torchwood) as Mercier’s jealous colleague, Linda Bassett (Queenie in Lark Rise to Candleford), Julian Glover (Wish Me Luck), Anton Lesser (The Hour), and Andrew Sachs (Fawlty Towers) as a refugee violinist with unexpected skills.

Brimming with period atmosphere, danger and romance, Spies of Warsaw is available April 16th on DVD and Blu-ray may be pre-ordered now.

The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe

Doctor Who Christmas 2011

Hmmm… the title of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special sounds a bit Narnia-inspired. From the trailer we posted last week, it also looks a bit Narnia-inspired, especially with that line about a “forest in a box.” That’s Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, Sense & Sensibility [2008], Lark Rise to Candleford [S1]) as the widow, and some of you may have spotted Bill Bailey (Black Books, Spaced). Christmas certainly came early for Bill Bailey, who is a lifelong fan of Doctor Who. Check out his brilliant Belgian jazz version of the Docteur Qui theme.

Colin Firth fan alert: Imagine attending the premiere and after party of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy as the guest of Mr. Firth himself. Click here to find out more about this charity auction on ebay. But time is of the essence, the bidding ends today, November 23rd, at 6 pm ET.

Celebrate the holidays with BBC specials

Lark Rise to Candleford

As BritCom fans, we often return to our favorite Christmas specials for holiday viewing, but we concede that it can be a hassle to track those down in multi-disc sets, not to mention trying to glean several favorites out of several collections for a full night’s entertainment. This year we decided to take the guesswork out, and pack these specials together into comedy and drama collections.

Now any night can be a spectacular BritCom night with the BBC Holiday Comedy Collection, which brings together four and a half hours of holiday-themed specials from Are You Being Served?, Good Neighbors, To the Manor Born, Allo Allo, Last of the Summer Wine, Keeping Up Appearances, Blackadder and The Vicar of Dibley. If you’ve ever tried to find the All Creatures Great and Small episode in which Siegfried (Robert Hardy) sets up a skeleton in a locked room to keep Tristan (Peter Davison) from raiding the Christmas champagne, it’s in the BBC Holiday Drama Collection along with specials from Ballykissangel, Monarch of the Glen, Lovejoy and Lark Rise to Candleford. For fans of both genres, you’d have to get up pretty early on Black Friday to find a more perfect gift (and better value) than the combined  BBC Holiday Comedy & Drama Gift Set.

And to really get you in the spirit, stop by our newly launched BBC All-stars and Staff  Holiday Reflections and Wishlist pages, this year with video messages from Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Ricky Gervais!

Doctor Who Fan Alert: Speaking of Christmas, we just got the trailer for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special. Be one of the first to see it!

Zen – New detective for Masterpiece Mystery

Zen

Matt Holyoak © 2011 Leftbank Pictures.

A year ago we announced that a series based on Michael Dibdin’s Aurelio Zen novels had been commissioned, and it would be filmed on location in Rome. Now that the PBS premiere has been announced for July 17th, we’d like to give everyone a heads up alert. For those who’d like to read ahead, the adapted novels are Vendetta, Cabal and Ratking. As we fully expected, Rufus Sewell cuts una bella figura as the Roman detective with a Venetian name. Bond Girl Caterine Murino (Casino Royale) co-stars as Zen’s love interest Tania Moretti, and Ben Miles (Coupling, Lark Rise to Candleford) lends both wit and intrigue as Zen’s unofficial taskmaster. The Italian locations, many in Rome’s sun-drenched EUR district, captivated British audiences in the grip of one of the bitterest winters in memory, and it is equally sure to gratify armchair travelers on sizzling summer nights.  The DVD (coming soon after the series finale) will include “An Italian Adventure,” a behind-the-scenes look at how the cast and crew set a style that harks back to Sixties favorites like The Saint.

Lark Rise (and Dawn French) returns!

Lark Rise to Candleford: Season 4

The fourth season of Lark Rise to Candleford premieres in the UK this Sunday, and we’re working to get the new DVD of this phenomenally popular drama out as soon as we can, hopefully in the spring. In addition to on-going favorites – Julia Sawalha, Claudie Blakley, Ben Aldridge, John Dagleish, Ruby Bentall, and Victoria Hamiliton– a potential love interest for the perpetually single Julia Sawalha’s Dorcas arrives in the form of newcomer Gabriel Cochrane (played by Richard Harrington, Collision).

Formerly the wealthy owner of a large iron foundry, Gabriel arrives widowed and destitute so Dorcas hires him as blacksmith to stoke her forge. Writer Bill Gallagher (who also wrote the recent revival of The Prisoner) said for this fourth series he wanted to create someone who had to start life again, in contrast to Sir Timothy (Ben Miles), a man of wealth and standing, and James Dowland (Jason Merrells), a self-made man.

The best news for long-term fans is the reappearance of Dawn French as Arless matriarch Caroline.

By the way, if you’ve been wondering where the Lark Rise crew goes to re-create Victorian England’s rural landscape, they head for the less traveled, southerly parts of the Cotswolds  off the main foot trails. John Dagleish, who tills the land as Alf Arless, told the Radio Times: “One of my favorite views was at Lasborough [a small parish in Gloucestershire], when you’re looking across the valley. We were able to do big, wide shots there, with nothing of modern day life getting in the way, so it was perfect for getting right back to that period.”

The return of Jonathan Creek

Jonathan Creek: Specials

Is it really over six years since we last saw Jonathan Creek on American television?  Then Jonathan was paired up with Julia Sawalha (Lark Rise to Candleford, Absolutely Fabulous) in a season made in 2004. You might be excused for supposing that Jonathan had abandoned solving impossible mysteries and that writer David Renwick (One Foot in the Grave) had cast him permanently back in his day-job as a hack magician’s idea man. But there is a delightful custom in British television of bringing popular characters back time and again for holiday specials. We were just about to release a complete set (including the unreleased specials featuring Caroline Quentin and Julia Sawalha) when two new specials were announced.  So look for DVD premieres of “The Grinning Man” and “The Judas Tree” this fall. These days Jonathan’s partner in general skepticism and sexual tension is Sheridan Smith (Gavin & Stacey, Lark Rise to Candleford).  Sheridan Smith is an accomplished singer and dancer, and is currently starring in the West End production of the musical Legally Blonde.
