Who are the Fades?

The Fades

One of the most talked about BBC series this fall was The Fades, which premieres on BBC America this Saturday, January 14, at 9pm ET. Created by Jack Thorne (Skins), The Fades is firmly in the horror genre, but with a strong thread of mystery surrounding who the Fades are and why they are appearing now. Within the mundane world of suburbia and school, the story unfolds with the heightened imagery of graphic novels. Iain De Caestecker stars as Paul– bewildered seventeen-year-old, reluctant hero and social pariah. Daniel Kaluuya (Skins S1 and S2) plays Paul’s best and only friend Mac, who applies everything he’s learned from the movies to the crisis at hand (with mixed results). The Fades producer Caroline Skinner is also one to watch. She’s the new executive producer for this year’s series of Doctor Who, replacing Piers Wenger and Beth Willis.

A brand new Nerdist special follows Episode One on BBC America at 10:15 pm ET. Devoted to the horror genre, the special features Lily Lovelace (Skins S3 and S4) talking about her role as Paul’s mortified sister, Anna. The cast of The Fades also includes Natalie Dormer (The Tudors, Captain America), Johnny Harris (Whitechapel) and Daniela Nardini (This Life, Reckless). In Canada The Fades premiered January 3rd on BBC Canada, which will air it through Feb 7th on Tuesdays at 8pm ET. The DVD and Blu-ray will be available on February 21st, the Tuesday after the series finale airs on BBC America.

Dramaville Fan Alert: Remember that The Hour and Luther Season Two are in the running for Golden Globe Awards. The ceremony, hosted once more by the irrepressible Ricky Gervais (The Office, An Idiot Abroad) airs this Sunday, January 15th, at 8pm ET on NBC. As we mentioned before, The Hour is up against Downton Abbey, which made its much anticipated return to Masterpiece last Sunday. Series Two is already available for pre-order, delivering February 7th.

The Office decade

y Gervais, The Office

Has it really been ten years since Ricky Gervais and company brought the mockumentary to the forefront of TV comedy? People Like Us had paved the way in its fly-on-the-wall approach, but its only recurring character was off screen most of the time. The weekly change in cast (even with guest stars of the caliber of David Tennant and Bill Nighy) offered little chance for depth of the bonding that occurred between audiences and the staff of Wernham Hogg.

Considering the phenomenal influence of The Office in the ensuing decade, the time is right for a 10th Anniversary Special Edition of The Office. In addition to the extras included on the original Collection DVD, we have mined the BBC Archive for the original 20-minute pilot and a 2007 Comedy Connections program tracing the series’ origins. Also included are specially recorded wraparound introductions for each Season One episode that aired on the BBC’s Night of The Office on August 30, 2009, as well as 40 more minutes of cast and celebrity interviews on the impact of The Office on life, the universe and everything. Special guests include Matthew Perry, Ben Stiller, Richard Curtis, Hugh Jackman and more! The Office Special Edition will come out on November 22 (the Tuesday before Thanksgiving), but you can pre-order it now.

Ricky Gervais to pop into US “Office”

Ricky Gervais, The Office

Ever since The Office was so successfully transplanted to the US, comparisons have been rife. Who’s more dysfunctional: David Brent or Michael Scott? Who’s funnier: Ricky Gervais or Steve Carell? Who would be funnier if you could see them together? For the answer to that last question, we have only a week to wait. After serving as executive producer on the American series for seven seasons, Gervais will briefly step in front of the camera on the episode that airs on January 27th. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Golden Globe Award-winning original BBC series, and it has been very gratifying to see how well its stars have done. Ricky Gervais has gone on to feature films and Extras. Martin Freeman (Sherlock) is not only Dr. Watson these days, but he has landed the role of Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Hobbit films. Mackenzie Crook raised his profile in Pirates of the Caribbean and all its sequels, but he continues to guest star in such BBC productions as Little Dorrit and Merlin Series 2 (which came out on Tuesday). If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no better time than now to try out the original Office — season singles are now only $13.98 at the shop.

Merlin returns to Syfy and to DVD

Merlin: The Complete Second Season

This week TV Guide reported that Merlin will return with its third season on Syfy early next year. This is great news for DVD fans because we’ll be able get Season Two out in January or February at the latest.  The enthusiasm of Merlin fans at ComicCon was electric, not least because teen lead Colin Morgan is a comic book geek himself.  Certainly the viewing figures for Season Two on Syfy grew and grew to an impressive average of 1.7 million. The handsome teen leads, Colin Morgan as young Merlin and Bradley James as young Arthur are ably supported by several generations of British acting greats, including Anthony Head (Persuasion, Little Britain) as King Uther, Richard Wilson (One Foot in the Grave) in a very funny turn as Merlin’s long-suffering mentor, and John Hurt (The Naked Civil Servant) as the voice of the dragon.  Season Two adds to that roster with Sarah Parish (Mistresses) and Adrian Lester (Hustle) as well as MacKenzie Crook. Crook, of course, shot to fame as the weasely Gareth in The Office, but he has since built up his box office cred in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  As with Season One, the next DVD is packed with extras: audio commentaries, behind the scenes, introductions, wallpapers and more.
