Clatterford: Season 2

1. Glastonbury
Tash is packing her rucksack for Glastonbury. Outraged that Spike has actually saved up for a ticket, she is determined to find her way in for free as usual, with son Raph reluctantly in toe, dressed as he is in fairy wings.
Meanwhile, there is panic when Guild member Susie confides in Sal that she thinks she is pregnant after a drunken one-night stand with the man who trims her leylandii (hedge). Knowing how much the village can gossip, Sal sends Tip to get a pregnancy testing kit from the surgery in secret. Eileen notices something secretive is going on at Sal's, but jumps to the wrong conclusion and thinks the Guild are planning a coup to overthrow her.
Back at Glastonbury, Tash's attempts to get in have resulted in Raph being taken to the lost children's tent, leaving her still stranded on the wrong side of the fence. Stubborn pride means she can't bring herself to call Caroline, who is backstage in the VIP campsite (son Mikey is headlining) attempting to stop Johnny from Razorlight continually breaking the swingball.
Tip returns from the surgery with news that profoundly effects Susie's predicament. Sal, who had been hoping for a quiet weekend, finds Tash and Raph back in the fold earlier than expected, thanks to Spike, who has decided to give up his ticket to bring them both home safely. They can always watch it on television.

2. The Ramble
Sal has organised a ramble for the whole Guild. Kicking against the traditional format Eileen has set up(which involves multi-tasking on the way and numerous questionnaires on the wonders of Mother Nature), Sal sees it as an opportunity to simply have a nice stroll and a chat with her friends - a chance for everyone to get to know each other better, perhaps. During the day, Eileen learns from Tip that all is not well on the farm, and all is not at all well in her marriage to Colin.
Tash is also planning to be up on the moor. As a Druid, she intends to exercise her right to walk on the Army firing range.
Sal feels that Spike would make a better boyfriend for her than Marcus ‘The Hunt', and tries to steer Spike towards this goal with some enthusiasm.
As the Guild members stop for their picnic lunch, they spot the Vicar also out taking the air - and he is not alone.
As the day draws to a close, Sal is reflecting on the success of her ‘freewheeling' initiative when Spike arrives on the scene with a big surprise for her. Still reeling from the shock, Sal and the others find themselves lost in a fast-descending impenetrable fog. With no phone signal, and no one back in the village with any idea of their location, Sal's unstructured ramble hasn't quite turned out as she had hoped.

3. The Killing Fields of Clatterford
Rosie has a new supervisor at the cheese factory and the stress has awoken Margaret, her malign alternate personality, from her recent slumbers. James recommends that her medication be increased to compensate, but Sal is concerned that they might lose Rosie's unique personality completely if she is too heavily sedated.
Meanwhile, the annual Clatterford Roundheads versus Cavaliers battle re-enactment has been cancelled due to Health and Safety concerns. All the men are disappointed to be robbed of the traditional mock punch-up, but the Guild comes up with an alternative ‘safe' plan to save the day - a competition involving a giant Soduko, a raft river-crossing and a speed-knitting contest.
Sal notices that Rosie has lined one of the rooms in her house with tin foil (it "keeps Margaret out") and comes up with a plan that allows Rosie to take place in the festival celebrations after all.
Spike now sees himself as a love rival to Marcus for Tash's hand, and an afternoon spent drinking in the festival beer tent does nothing to quell simmering rivalry between the two of them. As the dust settles, after the grand finale to the re-enactment festival gets out of hand, one of the two suitors will be left seriously hurt, and Tash will have betrayed her true emotions.

4. Wandering
The Guild's continuing rivalry with the neighbouring Guild of Hole rears its ugly head again in the form of a duet of grudge matches, first netball and then bowls. The netball is a disaster, despite Yasmeen being roped in as a ringer. The ladies resolve to have their revenge the following week at the bowls match - if only they can find a way to use their secret weapon (Rosie), who has been banned by the stiffs at the Bowls club for numerous instances of improper behaviour on the hallowed turf.
Meanwhile, with the help of the Vicar, Spike has written a love letter to Tash and offered her a dramatic ultimatum: leave Marcus and meet him by the Twisty Tree by five o'clock, or he will give up on their love and leave for another village. Tash is torn, but a depressing tour of a Starter Home that she and Marcus are considering buying (made all the more depressing by Kate Bales, who is showing them round) makes up her mind for her.
With time slipping away, Tash starts out on a desperate run to meet Spike before it's too late. However, she realises she has no idea where the Twisty Tree actually is and frantically interrupts the bowls game, which had been going rather well, to get urgent directions from Sal.
After all the fuss, things on the green eventually quieten down, but inevitably Rosie has one final surprise up her sleeve, or more accurately, up her skirt...

5. Sweet Bride
Tash accepts Spike's proposal of marriage and, despite offers of help from Sal, they decide that they will organise their own unique wedding themselves. It is to be a ceremony that will leave them "tied, and yet still free". Naively imagining that it will only take about two weeks to pull it all together, they set about making arrangements for the big day.
Slowly, it dawns on the happy couple that their magic day will cost a lot of money (£7,896 plus VAT) and cannot take place "within the next 200 years" due to prior bookings in the church and other numerous impediments. A distraught Tash throws herself on Sal's mercy. Sal, of course, is secretly delighted to be able to organise her daughter's big day after all - with the help of the Guild.
What follows is a magical Faerie Wedding by a babbling brook, complete with bewinged children and even a real unicorn (okay, a horse with a horn stuck to it's forehead). Tash and Spike exchange thoughtful and touching vows, and even James is moved to pay a touching tribute to his quite unique sister.
Meanwhile, there has been a ceasefire in Tip's ongoing war with Colin during the rushed organisation of the wedding reception on their nearby field. They pull off a fantastic party for the bride and groom, and start to see a way out of their own marital nightmare.
The day is capped by a generous gift from Sal to her only daughter - she has bought the local mobile library for her and Spike to go travelling in. What more could they ask for?

Caltterford: Season 2

"It's quite marvellous how a writer can switch from the slapstick of Ab Fab to the delicate chin-tickling of this show with such ease. Arguably Saunders' best work. It must never end." Julia Raeside, Guardian

"...a new series - oh joy! - of Jam And Jerusalem..." Julie Burchill, Sun

"Gently funny as always, with a predictably strong performance from Johnston, who holds the production together." Mike Bradley, Observer

"Yes, there are jokes about jumble sales and church organs, but they are delivered by flesh and blood characters who can cry as well as laugh." Matt Baylis, Daily Express

"Arguably Saunders' best work. It must neve end."Julia Raeside, Guardian
