Series 1
The magnificent Cairngorms are the beautiful backdrop as Archie MacDonald tries to get to grips with being the new laird of a huge, decaying family estate in the Highlands of Scotland. Archie is 28 and just about to open his trendy new fish restaurant in London with his beautiful girlfriend, Justine, when he gets the news of his unexpected inheritance. Glenbogle is one of the largest sporting estates in the Highlands. He will be the feudal landlord over 40,000 acres, 200 tenants, a house which makes Balmoral look like a cottage, and with an overdraft to match. To make matters worse, his aged eccentric parents, Hector and Molly MacDonald, come as part of the furniture and the local schoolteacher, feisty Katrina Finlay, is determined to make things as difficult as possible for Archie. There is also the high-spirited and fiery cook/housekeeper Lexie to contend with.
Series 2
Archie Macdonald has pledged himself to Glenbogle, but now faces a titanic struggle to make the estate pay. But rebellious tenants, local vendettas, and scheming golddiggers must be confronted as he strives to make Glenbogle a thriving tourist attraction. And then, of course, there's Hector, his unruly and mischievous father, who finds ever more elaborate ways to frustrate his son's endeavours. All of which leaves Archie precious little time to sort out his complex love life: London girlfriend Justine vies with his childhood friend Katrina and the ever hopeful Lexie for Archie's affections...
Series 3
With Glenbogle still strapped for cash, the bank is about to take over the estate's finances until it turns a profit. With so many people depending on him, Archie has no alternative but to try to work with the stern and steely Stella Moon. Meanwhile, Archie's errant parents, Hector and Molly, continue to go their own sweet way, doing their unintentional best to frustrate their son's endeavours.

Then his sister Lizzie arrives and provides Archie and Lexie with their toughest dilemma yet. Meanwhile, Molly and Andrew's deepening relationship falters when a revelation leaves Molly reeling. She seeks solace in Golly, whose feelings for her are stronger than she suspects. The arrival of his daughter Jessica also forces him to take a crash course in parenting. Despite having a new girlfriend (Kilwillie's niece Hemione), Duncan is attracted to Jessica, who has usurped him as Golly's deputy.

Series 1
Episode 1 - Archie, the young owner of a fashionable London restaurant is called to the bedside of his ailing father only to walk into a trap. His cantankerous father, Hector, has simply caught a cold, and his mother - the amiably dotty Molly - has dragged Archie north on a pretext and has arranged events so that he can't escape back to London.
Episode 2 - As Archie tries to escape to London he is stalled by a banker come to foreclose on the huge loan to the estate. Glenbogle's loyal retainers work together with Archie to change the banker's mind. Eventually it's Lexie, the punk-ish young housekeeper, who persuades the banker that love can be more than a match for any balance sheet.
Episode 3 - Justine, Archie's girlfriend and business partner from London, arrives out of the blue to find out what Archie is up to. She strays into a locked room that belonged to Archie's brother, who drowned in the loch when he and Archie were teenagers. Justine thinks Archie has too much of a soft spot for Katrina and jealousies come to a head at the social event of the season, the Glenbogle Ball.
Episode 4 - A friend of Hector's uncovers an ancient diary. It belonged to a former servant at the house - Katrina's late mother - and records an affair she once had with someone called 'H'. Molly walks out on Hector over the revelations, but order is restored when Katrina's father turns out to be the genealogist himself.
Episode 5 - Archie's troublesome sister, Lizzie, turns up with her New Age boyfriend, Gerald, intent on converting Glenbogle into a hippy-ish healing centre. Archie is staggered when the charismatic Gerald finds a spring using 'mystical' powers. But the two are soon at loggerheads when Gerald persuades Hector to rediscover his lost youth by taking a swim in the loch.
Episode 6 - As the new Laird of Glenbogle, Archie must take part in a traditional boat race across the loch against neighbouring landowner, Laird Kilwillie, in their annual grudge-match. Tempers fray when Kilwillie asserts 'finders keepers' privileges over an ancient ring, once a MacDonald heirloom. Archie wins back the ring by beating Kilwillie in the race.
Episode 7 - Archie has organised a special Highland night at his restaurant in London. The journey south becomes a shambles and the patience of Archie's long-suffering girlfriend wears thin. On the trip home Archie seeks solace in the arms of Lexie. Meanwhile Katrina is standing against Kilwillie in the local elections. Archie returns just in time to see her triumph in the vote.
Episode 8 - Justine gives Archie an ultimatum - return to London or give up his share in the restaurant. It's crunch time for Archie as he must decide where his loyalties lie. Archie offers to save Glenbogle by selling out from his restaurant, but Hector and Katrina unveil an elaborate idea to save face all round, just as Justine arrives to claim back her man…
Series 2
Episode 1 - Archie's plans to turn the crumbling estate into a cash cow are thrown off course by the arrival of a team of bankers from the firm that backs the estate. Six months of Justine's imperial rule has taken its toll and the natives are restless. Lexie is vowing to quit her job, Hector and Molly have already left the house, and Katrina has decided to avoid the estate altogether - having been deterred by the jealous Justine. Archie has to take action. Justine and Archie's break-up is filmed on the newly installed Glenbogle web-cam and broadcast to the estate residents!
Episode 2 - The appointment of a Head Ranger - charged with dragging Glenbogle into the 21st century - brings fresh tension to the big house. The competing applications pose a tough dilemma for Archie. Should he promote from within or buy in outside expertise and risk alienating the household? Outsider Fergal MacLure has all the right qualifications, but how will Duncan and Golly react to being passed over, and what will his appointment mean for Archie and Katrina's relationship? It is clear that Katrina has already taken a shine to Fergal, and Archie knows that appointing the dashing Irishman could cost him dear.
Episode 3 - Hector must dig deep to save Archie's bacon after a vital grant application is rejected because of a long-held grudge. With the estate's future hanging in the balance, Hector is forced to confront his old flame, Edith Rankin, the fearsome council leader, whose feelings of rejection still burns as fiercely now as it did 40 years ago. Fergal's desire to be top dog at Glenbogle causes tensions with Golly. Duncan, as ever, is caught in the middle - torn between ambition and loyalty. The battle is on for Duncan's loyalty, as Fergal and Golly lock antlers.
Episode 4 - Archie would like to forget his 30th birthday, but Molly is secretly organising celebrations. Hector – obsessed by Archie's age and the absence of a long-term heir – is planning to marry Archie off, and thinks he's struck gold when he meets a rich Irish nobleman and his charming daughter. Whilst fending off a host of unsuitable brides, Archie has a fight on his hands with cantankerous former tenant, Tosh McKellan. Katrina and Fergal are on hand to help, and she makes the most of the opportunity to let the birthday boy know that she and Fergal could be more than just good friends.

Meanwhile, the local education authority is threatening to close Katrina's school. Fergal thinks he has the answer. He is shortly to leave Glenbogle for a job in New Zealand and Katrina could go with him.
Episode 7 - The unexpected arrival of a heavily pregnant Lizzie shatters the peace at Glenbogle. Abandoned by a married man, she is looking for comfort and support, but comes up against Hector's disapproval. The result is an explosive family schism, with Archie caught in the middle, and it's a race against time to heal the breach between his father and fiery sister before the next generation of the MacDonald family is born. As Katrina prepares to leave Glenbogle for good, Lizzie questions her desire to start a new life with Fergal. Will she go through with it? Or has Lizzie done enough to throw Katrina and Archie a lifeline?
Episode 8 - With the transformation of Glenbogle now complete, Archie has good reason to be proud of his achievements. The backward estate he inherited is now a fully functioning tourist attraction, due to be opened at Glenbogle's annual clan gathering. However, a rich businessman, Joe MacDonald, arrives from the USA for the gathering with a legitimate genealogical claim to the Estate. A desperate Archie must invoke the Chieftains' Challenge and do battle with Joe to decide who is the rightful Monarch of the Glen.
