"Loaded with vintage songs and carefully detailed, Stonewall looks and sounds great and creates an entertaining meld of fact and fantasy with a sure-fire mix of humor and pathos..." - Los Angeles Times
Sassy, outrageous attitude comes out in this 1995 musical comedy-drama, based on the real-life events leading up to the 1969 Stonewall riots. Narrated by Puerto Rican drag queen "La Miranda" (Guillermo Díaz, Weeds, Chappelle's Show), the film recounts the story of the riots that followed a series of harassing police raids targeting gay bars in New York's tumultuous Greenwich Village. Protesters battled police for several nights, making it the first incident of gay and transgender civil rights activism. Featuring a vintage, authentic soundtrack featuring classics by The Shangri-Las, Patti LaBelle and Judy Garland, Stonewall was inspired by the memoir of the same title by noted gay historian Martin Duberman.
