In the days before Irish independence, humorous misunderstandings persist between the eccentric occupants of a small Irish town and the conservative English Resident Magistrate appointed to keep order. In Series 2, the major (Peter Bowles, To the Manor Born, Rumpole of the Bailey) tries to carry out his duties as patron of the annual local regatta, but gets sidetracked by a raid on the butcher shop. Later a cargo of rum washes ashore and disappears without a trace, except for local drunken revelry. And all hilarity breaks out when a maharaja and his polo players come to town. Filmed entirely on location in gorgeous County Kildare.
This beloved series is based on the novels of Edith Somerville and Violet Ross?two Irish cousins who shared a need to earn money in the 1880s. Hence their apparently masculine noms de plume: E. Somerville and Martin Ross.
