When Gerda and her mother take in penniless street urchin Kay, powerful forces come into play that
will take both children on a magical journey and test their friendship to the extreme.
One cold winter night, a splinter from an ancient enchanted looking-glass pierces Kay's eye, turning
his heart to ice and making him angry and unhappy. He is enchanted by the Snow Queen and taken
to her palace in the frozen North, where he lies asleep under a deep spell.
Gerda decides that she must do whatever she can to rescue her friend, so the courageous young girl
sets out on a perilous quest which takes her through many strange lands.
On the way, she is helped by a talking crow and a flying reindeer. She also meets talking flowers
and many other strange and mysterious characters: the old lady in the Enchanted Flower Garden,
the Prince and the Princess, the Little Robber Maiden, the Lapland Woman and the Finland Woman.
Finally, there's an exciting flight through the Northern Lights before the intrepid Gerda enters the
palace of the terrifying Snow Queen herself.
How can the warm-hearted little girl in the red cloak possibly match the power of the cold-hearted
Snow Queen, who can tie all the winds of the world together?
Through innocence, faith and love, of course. Gerda's tears bring her young friend Kay back to
warmth and life, the Snow Queen melts away and Spring returns to the countryside.
