What is your fondest holiday memory?

I went with my sister, brother in law and my boyfriend to Loch Lomond in Scotland and we stayed in a cottage in a very remote, isolated valley...it was breathtaking. But we woke up on Christmas morning to find we had no water. Well, what started out as a nightmare, turned into something rather magical. We had to go to the burn to get the water to make the dinner, wash up and wash ourselves. It was so old fashioned and romantic. The holiday was incredibly special because it was back to basics and simple. Fires, reading books and long adventurous walks. Perfect! Read More

What is the best holiday gift you have either received or given to someone?

Has to be from my ex boyfriend. A plane ticket hanging from the tree. To north Sweden. We boarded two planes and I was still wondering 'why Sweden'? The further north we headed, the more picture postcard became the views. Snow covered Christmas trees as far as the eye could see...out of the taxi, I was taken to a log cabin, changed into a thick explorer type jumpsuit, big furhat and shown my next form of transport...a huskies drawn sledge. Amazing. Incredible journey through the forest...thick thick snow. And then a night in the ice hotel...it was such a thrilling experience! Woke up to a trip to the steam room and hot blueberry juice then off home. One to remember. Felt very spoilt! Read More

What is your fondest holiday memory?

I once spent a wonderful Christmas staying in Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya while filming for Wildlife on One. We had our Christmas lunch out in the savannah as thousands of flamingos flew past.

What is the best holiday gift you have either received or given to someone?

One of the best Christmas presents I ever had was a satellite phone call from one of the field directors working on Planet Earth. He had just filmed the first ever intimate images of snow leopards in the wild. The snow leopard sequence is still one of my very favourites in the Planet Earth series.

What is your fondest holiday memory?/ What is the best holiday gift you have either received or given to someone?

I can answer both questions at the same time.

My fondest holiday memory is watching The Jungle Book. My mum took me at Christmas when I was about 6 years old. I'd never been to a cinema before. I can still remember the place to this day. Everything seemed carpeted. The floors, the walls, everything. I had sweets and Pepsi and the biggest screen in the world, I thought. I was blown away. I lived a life in a couple of hours. When I thought Balloo was dead I was sobbing uncontrollably but trying to hide it. My mum was consolling me but didn't seem as distressed as me. Then when it turned out that Balloo was still alive I was f$!king euphoric. But it made me think. On the way home I asked my mum how old I'd be when she died. "Old" She said. "Will I care?" I asked worried about my far off future feelings. She wasn't sure what to say. She knew I wanted the answer "no" in some ways but as usual she chose honesty. "Yes" she said. "But it wont happen for a very long time". That was good enough for me. When I returned to school a couple of weeks later we had to do a little presentation about our holidays. I proceeded to act out the entire movie using the other kids in the class. I told them where to stand and what to say, filling in the action with narration. Eventually the teacher had to stop me because I was taking up the whole day. Now I'm a real director I never make that same mistake. I'm home by 4 O'clock on any movie I do. I haven't seen The Jungle book for about 40 years so I'm not sure how good it is but it's still one of my fondest memories because it was a gift from my mum. My mum died when I was 40. She was right by the way. I did care. But luckily thirty something years before that, I'd learnt the bear necessities to get me through. Just like Balloo, she's still with me." Read More

What is your fondest holiday memory?

My first White Christmas aged nine. I was a chorister at the time at St Albans Cathedral and had just finished singing at the festival of nine lessons and carols late on Christmas. I came out of the Cathedral and snow had just fallen for the first time that winter - a perfect unmarked blanket of snow. I remember the silence and the reflection of the lights from the stained glass windows and street lamps absolutely beautiful.

What is the best holiday gift you have either received or given to someone?

As a child the best gift I received was a James Bond spy set complete with suitcase (made of cardboard) false passport and very realistic gun! ( I've still got it in the attic.) As an adult - a beautiful flyfishing rod. Best I've given is a pair of diamond ear-rings to my wife - a diamond for each of our first two children. ( We now have three kids so I guess I owe her another diamond...maybe this Christmas.)

What is your fondest holiday memory?

Celebrating New Years' at my grandmother's house when we were children. We don't really celebrate Christmas in Japan, but New Year's is a very big thing. It's sort of our equivalent to Christmas/Thanksgiving - and traditionally spent with all the family and relatives. My grandmother (and most of the relatives) live in Nagoya, Japan - about 3 hours by bullet train from Tokyo. We would all usually get there on Dec 30 or 31, catch up with all the relatives, then we'd all basically stay in and eat, drink, play games, sleep and graze until Jan 3rd. It was also an exciting holiday as a child - as we'd receive OTOSHI-DAMA (Special New Year's money) from all of the relatives - which would usually amount to a quite a sum. We had one uncle who would always give us the OTOSHI-DAMA in pennies, one uncle who would mistakenly (or rather drunkenly) give us 10,000 yen ($120) each, and one aunt who would also give us toys, jewellery and clothes. Now I am the 'Auntie who gives OTOSHI-DAMA in Dollars and Pounds'...! Read More

The best holiday gift I've ever received was a long weekend away to Vienna, Austria (and in a private jet too!) It was just before Christmas, so all the Christmas lights were up. It was absolutely freezing, but so beautiful and magical.

Life in the Freezer, I'm a HUGE fan of Sir David Attenborough - and all of his programmes - especially Planet Earth and Life - which just blew me away. I already have most of them on DVD - but this is one I don't have. I'll also be giving Planet Earth and Life as gifts to my family this year.

One of my favorite holiday memories is getting a snooker table as a kid. My two granddads play on it all day and didn't give me a go, because they are very competitive. In the lounge on Christmas Day, it was cool.

What is the best holiday gift you have either received or given to someone?

What's the best Christmas present I've ever received, that's a good question? The snooker table was pretty good, actually. I'd imagine probably a football kit or a football. Something football related really. But I guess the best gift one could receive is your family around on Christmas Day. That's number one.

I'd gift Doctor Who, ha, or Life. I think Life is so amazing.

What is your fondest holiday memory?

My fondest holiday memory was on Christmas Eve when I was about 5 years old. Just as my mom was making progress getting us all to go to bed, my dad walked in with Hoppity Hops for all 7 of us kids. In case you aren't familiar, they were those large rubber bouncing balls that you jumped up and down on till you got tired. We were NEVER given gifts before Christmas! Now picture all 7 of us bouncing around in the house for a few hours simultaneously. What a nightmare that must have been for my mom.

What is the best holiday gift you have either received or given to someone?

One Christmas Eve, a few hours before Midnight mass, my boyfriend presented me with several small wrapped packages. He asked me if I'd feel uncomfortable opening them in front of my family which was fine by me. He always gave a tremendous amount of thought to the gifts he gave me and this time was no exception. Each box was a different piece of jewelry (earings, necklaces, etc.). Although some of the pieces seemed a bit over-sized or a bit bright in color (such as day-glow orange), we were all touched by the thought he gave to each. As we left for church he asked me to wear the orange earings. I didn't quite like them with my peach satin blouse, but it seemed important to him. On the return trip home from mass he handed me another jewelry box which stunned me a bit. This one was a beautiful pair of gold earings. As I looked up he had a huge smile on his face and said- "the others were all from the Five-and-Dime". Read More

What is your fondest holiday memory?

One of my favourite Holiday memories was when my parents decided to take us all away from the bitter Canadian Winter where I grew up, and we spent Christmas in the sun in California. Sure, we missed the sledding, and skating, and shovelling 6 feet of snow, but we were all together on a great adventure, and had a blast decorating our hotel rooms and seeing the sights as a family. And, of course, the snow was still there for us when we got home so we got the best of both worlds (After we dug out the cars!) Read More

Christmas morning was always a magical time. I remember one Christmas in particular when my sister and I came down the stairs and the gifts literally went from one corner of the room to the other! (My dad must have gotten a bonus that year!). Right smack in the middle were two fancy doll carriages with big red bows on their handles. I'll never forget how excited and happy I was to see them. We stood there screaming and jumping up and down. I can't tell you a single other gift I received that year, but I've never forgotten that doll carriage. Read More

My favorite Christmas memory is from the early Sixties, when I used to carol door-to-door with my older sisters Jenifer and Pamela on Birch Street in Bellaire, TX. My fondest Christmas memories are all of the Christmases I got to spend with my grandparents and great-grandparents. They made every holiday unforgettable, and since I'm about to become a father, I'm not starting to grasp just how special our family holidays were to them and my parents.

What is the best holiday gift you have either received or given to someone?

The best holiday surprise I ever received was when I was 10 and had finished opening my gifts and was really disappointed that I didn't get the baseball card that I really wanted. My dad then asked me if I had definitely checked my stocking, and that I better do that before we put everything away. I reached in pulled out the last card I needed for my set. What is your fondest holiday memory?

I grew up in a Jewish household that only celebrated Hannukah. But as a youngster I wanted nothing more than to celebrate Christmas. On Christmas morning I would wake up really early and sneak downstairs. I'd then cover all the walls of our living room with decorations I'd create out of construction paper. There was red and green paper links streaming across the room and a paper Christmas tree without any presents underneath of course. My family would laugh when they came downstairs but I was a happy girl to surprise them. Read More

What is your fondest holiday memory?

One of my favourite Holiday memories was when my sisters and I were very young, we could see a red blinking radio tower light from our bedroom window. Despite the fact that that light shown year round - it never failed that on Christmas Eve, we somehow managed to believe that it was Rudolph coming with Santa in his sleigh. Encouraging our belief, my mom then took us out in the morning to see the bits of half eaten carrots and Reindeer hoof prints across the frosty lawn - which, we now know, she had created by walking our Irish setter across the lawn in the early morning.
